“I for one, am always looking for a solution to shed those extra pounds in a fun, yet effective way. In Physique 57, I think I found the answer. For those of you who may have heard this name making the rounds in the fitness space, let me give you the lowdown on what this New York based barre work out is all about.”

With erratic work hours, long days and longer nights, finding the time to work out is hard enough. Dragging yourself to the gym with the same old equipment and a monotonous fitness regime just makes it harder to get into shape.

The Story

It all began in 2005, when Jennifer Vaughan Maanavi, an Ivy League Wall Street professional, joined forces with Tanya Becker, one of the leading Lotte Berk instructors in the country, and together, they created Physique 57. And now, thanks to Mallika Tarkas Parekh, we have a little bit of New York in our very own city.

How does it work?

It is essentially a barre-based workout that blends cardio, strength training and stretching, designed to give you visible results in just 8 classes. That’s right, just 8! Using your own body weight as resistance, the Physique 57 workout targets muscles in your arms, thighs, seat and abs to the point of fatigue then stretches them for relief. 57 minutes of a full body workout which is all about the tiny movements and big results.

What can you look forward to?

My first impression as I walked into the beautiful space, full of motivational words on the walls and warm smiles to welcome me, I immediately felt disconnected to the outside world and was pumped up and ready to give this my best shot. The work out in itself is quite challenging, and unlike anything I’ve ever done before. It is a low impact workout with high intensity. It really focuses on those problem areas without being unnecessarily exhausting. Along with great trainers checking your form and pushing you to keep at it, and a playlist of some amazing dance tracks, the whole session started and ended on such a high. During and post class, I felt my smaller muscles put to task, which I didn’t even know existed. I have to say, I loved every one of those 57 minutes!

In Conclusion...

All in all, I think this is a great form of exercise no matter what stage of your fitness journey you’re on and what your goal is. It’s a fun, fresh and result driven work out that’ll keep you coming back for more. As they rightly say at Physique 57, It doesn’t get easier — you just get better.
